Disclaimer:
These pages about different languages / apis / best practices were mostly jotted down quckily and rarely corrected afterwards.
The languages / apis / best practices may have changed over time (e.g. the facebook api being a prime example), so what was documented as a good way to do something at the time might be outdated when you read it (some pages here are over 15 years old).

Bookmarklets

coding examples

If you work with the Netscape Communicator or the Microsoft Internet Explorer you might want to use a bookmarklet to interact with your favourite searchengine.
The benefits are as follows:

  • A click on the corresponding bookmark transfers any marked word or phrase within the browser windows directly to the searchengine and shows possible results in your browser window. No more copy & paste, no further hassle.
  • If there is nothing marked, a click will open a small window asking you for word(s) to search for. As soon as you entered some keywords, the resulting page from the searchengine is loaded and displayed.

Try it! It might not sound like the coolest thing ever, but just try it and you will see how convinient it is. Just follow these instructions:

In the following, I show you in detail (2 easy steps) how to store the bookmarklet in your browser. For this reason, I distinguish Netscape and Explorer users:

First, make sure your Personal Toolbar is shown. If it's not, you just need to click on the corresponding toolbar tab in the upper left corner (below the File menu entry). First, make sure your Links section is shown and some space is left. You can always activate it this way: View -> Toolbars -> Links.
Drag and drop the following link from this position to your Personal Toolbar.

    Bookreviews!

Alternatively, if you prefer to have this link in your bookmarks, you can right-click on this link and select Add bookmark.

Drag and drop the following link from this position to your Links section.

    Bookreviews!

Alternatively, if you prefer to have the link among your favourites, you can right-click on this link and select Add to Favorites.

That's it! Give it a try: mark the following word:     Pratchett     and click on your Bookreviews! bookmark (JavaScript has to be enabled in your browser settings):
Now when you tried it, you realize how convinient it is!
Perhaps you would like to add other searchengines to your toolbar,
I have made a list of links below (in the white area). To add them, just drag and drop them as you did above. All links work in both Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer.
